Behind The Scenes of Transforming Education: Volunteer Training for "Safeguarding Classrooms"

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

 ~ Benjamin Franklin

As part of our commitment to advancing comprehensive sexuality education in India amongst youth, we recently launched an interactive workshop for educators in schools, supported by Education Shifts Power, a consortium led by UN Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) and Plan International, known as “Safeguarding Classrooms”.

But wait, how did we get there?

Recently on 27 July, our team of volunteers underwent educator training to prepare for leading the workshop.

The impact we have left, though small, across schools- BVM, The Indian School and TIS, has been only possible through thorough preparation.

🔍 Highlights from Our Training:

  1. Understanding Educators: We explored the impacts educators have had on our lives, with open honest discussion on the positive experiences we have had and the way it has shaped our lives.
  2. Knowing what SexEd is: We focused on our core principle of comprehensive sexuality education, emphasizing age-appropriate sexuality education in classrooms.
  3. Challenging stereotypes: Group activities focused on identifying our own bias, has always been our key method of learning how to implement strategies we vouch for.
  4. Clarifying Terminology: We welcomed all insightful questions and clarified key terms related to sexuality and gender, enhancing our ability to communicate these concepts clearly.
  5. Strategy for the real-world: With over 100+ workshops already under their belt, our founder “Niyati Sharma” and Associate-Head “Anisha Hallan” shared their expertise and conducted an interactive session where volunteers delved into case-studies and possible scenarios including Q&A.

Volunteer training is a crucial step in ensuring we are well-prepared to support educators in creating safe, inclusive classrooms. Our team is excited to put this knowledge into action and make a difference.
