Understanding Prostate Cancer: What You Need To Know

  • Prostate cancer ranks as the second most common cancer among men in India
  • Men over 50 are at higher risk- but younger men aren’t immune
  • Spotting signs early could save your life
  • While prevention isn’t foolproof, here’s how you can lower your risk
  • A prostate cancer diagnosis isn’t the end of the road

What is Prostate Cancer?

The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped organ located just below the bladder in men. It plays an important role in producing semen (fluid that nourishes and transports sperm). Sometimes, cells in the prostate begin to grow uncontrollably. This abnormal growth forms a lump, also known as a tumor. When this happens, it is called prostate cancer. In most cases, it grows slowly and stays in the prostate, but in some cases can spread to other parts of the body.

Who can get it?

It mostly affects older men, especially those above 50. But some men are more likely to get it than others if:

  • Someone in their family tree had it
  • Some communities are more likely to develop it than others (yep! Read more about it here)
  • Unhealthy lifestyle – diet, obesity, smoking, chemical exposure etc. might increase your risk

What are the signs and symptoms?

Unfortunately, detecting cancer in the early stages is pretty difficult. However, if they do appear, they might be:

  • Blood in the urine, which might make the urine look pink, red or cola-colored.
  • Blood in the semen.
  • Needing to urinate more often.
  • Trouble getting started when trying to urinate.
  • Waking up to urinate more often at night.

If the cancer spreads to other parts of the body, known as Metastatic prostate cancer, the symptoms would be:

  • Accidental leaking of urine
  • Back pain
  • Bone pain
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of weight
  • Weakness in arms or legs

How can I avoid it?

While there is no sure way to avoid prostate cancer, there are some ways to lower your chances. You can refer to  Explore the Prostate with us! for more details. To get more information on the screening process for Prostate cancer, you can also visit CDC website.

What can I do if I have it?

If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, don’t panic. Many men live long, healthy lives after treatment. Your doctor will explain your options based on your needs. These usually include:

  • Active surveillance: if it’s growing slowly
  • Surgery of removing the prostate
  • Radiation therapy where high-energy rays are used to kill cancer cells
  • Hormone therapy: where cancer’s growth-assisting hormones are blocked.

It’s also important to talk to your close ones to help you cope emotionally. You’re not alone!
